Collection: Kra N'Guessan

Born in Ivory Coast, Kra N'Guessan (1954) trained successively at the School of Fine Arts in Abidjan and then in Paris, graduating from the painting section in 1980.

Over the following years, he contributed to strengthen the foundations of the Vohou Vohou movement of which he was the major figure, alongside Youssouf Bath, Théodore Koudougnon and Yacouba Touré, until 1991 and developed with them a working method anchored in the tradition of ancestral aesthetics founded, not only on the use of natural pigments and raw materials – earth, sand, tree bark, animal skins, bones, fish bones, fabrics… but also on the drawing of signs carrying meaning such as hieroglyphs or goldweight.

Transformed and assembled, the objects collected are diverted from their original origin to serve the Vohou philosophy and thus create a new visual language.

Né en Côte d'Ivoire, Kra N’Guessan (1954) s’est formé successivement aux Beaux-Arts d’Abidjan puis de Paris, dont il sort diplômé de la section peinture en 1980.

Au cours des années suivantes, il contribue à renforcer les bases du mouvement Vohou Vohou dont il est la figure majeure, aux côtés de Youssouf Bath, Théodore Koudougnon et Yacouba Touré, jusqu’en 1991 et développe avec eux une méthode de travail ancrée dans la tradition d’une esthétique ancestrale fondée, non seulement sur l’utilisation de pigments naturels et de matériaux bruts – terre, sable, écorces d’arbre, peaux d’animaux, os, arêtes de poissons, tissus… mais aussi sur le dessin de signes porteurs de sens tels que les hiéroglyphes ou les poids à peser l’or.

Transformés et assemblés, les objets collectés sont détournés de leur origine première pour servir la philosophie Vohou et créer ainsi, un nouveau langage plastique.
