Collection: Ibou Diouf
Ibou Diouf (1941 - 2017) is one of the key players in the emergence of an independent Senegalese art scene.
In 1960, at the age of 19, Ibou Diouf joined the School of Fine Arts that Senegal, recently independent, has just inaugurated. Six years later, the first World Festival of Negro Arts notices his works and uses one for his poster. The artist draws the attention of the writer Léopold Sédar Senghor.
In addition to his painting, Ibou Diouf worked as a bookkeeper for the Thiès Tapestry Manufacture and later costume designer and theater designer, notably for the Daniel Sorano National Theater in Dakar.
The artist bypasses the fatal pitfall of falling into an official art. Despite some eclipses, the work of Ibou Diouf has never ceased to be appreciated in Senegal and beyond national borders until his death in 2017.

Ibou Diouf (1953 - 2017) est l'un des acteurs incontournables d'une scène artistique sénégalaise indépendante.
En 1960, à l’âge de 19 ans, Ibou Diouf intègre l’École des Beaux-Arts que le Sénégal, indépendant depuis peu, vient d’inaugurer. Six ans plus tard, le premier Festival Mondial des Arts Nègres remarque ses œuvres et en utilise une pour son affiche. L’artiste attire l’attention de l’écrivain Léopold Sédar Senghor.
L’œuvre d’Ibou Diouf se distingue par sa transdisciplinarité. En plus de sa peinture, il travaille en tant que cartonnier pour la Manufacture de tapisseries de Thiès puis costumier et décorateur de théâtre, notamment pour le Théâtre National Daniel Sorano de Dakar.
L’artiste contourne le fatal écueil de tomber dans un art officiel. Malgré quelques éclipses, l’œuvre d’Ibou Diouf n’a jamais cessé d’être appréciée au Sénégal puis hors des frontières nationales jusqu’à son décès survenu à Dakar en 2017.
