Collection: Gerard Sekoto

Widely considered the pioneer of urban social realism in South African art history, Gerard Sekoto (1913 - 1993) was born in the same year the first segregation legislations were passed by the Parliament of South Africa. He began painting as a child with chalks and coloured pencils - materials that informed the thick and heavy texture of his eventual style. After meeting Ernest Mancoba, who encouraged him to become an artist, Sekoto moved to Johannesburg in 1938, then to Cape Town in 1942 and Pretoria in 1945. He then left his home country, moving in Paris in 1947 in self-imposed exile. Here he worked as a pianist in bars at night while taking drawing classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Despite breaking into the Parisian gallery world and gaining popularity for his paintings internationally, he suffered a period of psychological stress and was admitted to city's St Anne's asylum in 1949, where he made an acclaimed series of charcoal sketches of fellow patients that exemplify the artist's deeply empathic vision.

Considéré comme le pionnier du réalisme social urbain dans l'art sud-africain, Gerard Sekoto (1913 - 1993) est né l'année de l'adoption par le parlement des premières lois sur la ségrégation raciale en Afrique du Sud. Il dessine dès l'enfance, à la craie et aux crayons de couleur, ce qui explique la texture épaisse du style qu'il adoptera plus tard. Il décide de fuir son pays en 1947 et s'installe à Paris. Il travaille la nuit comme pianiste de bar et passe la journée à étudier le dessin à l'Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Malgré une percée dans les galeries parisiennes et une notoriété grandissante, il traverse une période de détresse psychologique et est interné à l'hôpital Sainte-Anne en 1949. Il y réalise une magnifique série de croquis de patients, au fusain, qui témoigne d'une profonde empathie.
